Andros Overview

At 100 miles long and 40 miles wide Andros is by far the largest of all the Bahamian Islands and possibly the least explored.  Andros is split by the north, middle and south bights which themselves create access by boat to both sides of the island.

Best known for its bonefishing and diving activities, Andros is home to the world’s third largest barrier reef which runs for 140 miles down the east shore of the island.  Between Andros and the reef the waters are about 6ft to 15ft deep however, on the other side of the reef they reach 6,000 ft!

The islands 8,000 inhabitants all live on the eastern shoreline between Nicholl’s Town in the north and Mars bay in the south.  The island has four airports, one near Nicholl’s Town, the largest village on Andros, one by Andros Town, one near Moxey Town  and one by Congo Town.

Driving south fron Nicholl’s town you’ll pass through Staniard Creek with the Kamalame Cay Resort to Fresh Creek, a small hamlet featuring a few restaurants, a small hotel, boat docks, markets and shops.  There are some excellent tranquil bonefishing flats around here.  A short drive south will bring you to Andros Town and the airport.  There is easy access to the barrier reef from Andros Town.

A further thirty minute drive south will bring you to Cargill Creek and almost the end of the road.  This area is famous for its bonefishing and the well known Andros Island Bonefishing Club.

Mangrove Cay, accessed either by boat or air is an area of dense pine forests, coral  shorelines and deserted beaches.  You’ll also find the Victoria Point blue hole here.  All life revolves around Moxey Town.

South Andros, again accessed only by boat or air, features Driggs Hill, a small settlement with a church, store and government dock.  Close at hand is Congo Town Airport.  Further south you’ll find The Bluff settlement with miles of golden beaches.
