Grand Bahama Overview The fourth largest island in The Bahamas, (96 miles long) famous in the ‘60s and ‘70s for gambling and golfing, Grand Bahama is now becoming a major tourist destination. Its superb beaches, largely undiscovered, crystal clear water, coral reefs, excellent infrastructure, virtually non-existent traffic on well made up roads and proximity to Florida (52 miles off Palm Beach), ensures many vacationers return year after year. Most of the commercial activity on the island is centred around Freeport, The Bahama’s second largest city. Just outside Freeport is the waterfront area of Lucaya, a recently developed holiday paradise with some excellent hotels, shops and restaurants. The Lucayan harbour welcomes cruise ships, Mainly from Fort Lauderdale and Cape Canaveral. Outside of the Freeport area there several areas of natural beauty to discover, for nature lovers the Lucayan National Park is a must; there are also a number of wonderful reefs on which to scuba dive or snorkel and don’t forget to check out the many fishing settlements dotted all over the island.
