HOLIDAYING IN THE BAHAMAS
(The name Bahamas comes from the Spanish baja mar meaning shallow water).

The Bahamas is one of the finest holiday destinations in the world.  The climate varies very little during the year, the average daily maximum temperature in December and January being 25 degrees centigrade and in the middle of summer (July and August) around 32 degrees centigrade.

The most popular time to visit is December through May, but beware, hotel prices are about 30% higher during these popular months.  The hurricane season is officially between June and November with the greatest risk being August through October.

The water and beaches of The Bahamas are some of the most beautiful in the world.
All Bahamian beaches are public up to the high water mark so as long as you can find access either by sea or land you can use them!

Lifestyle in The Bahamas is very relaxed and despite the number of visitors The Bahamas attracts annually, it is not difficult to find your own secluded bay. Life usually revolves around diving, snorkelling, boating, fishing and sun-worshiping!

We recommend visiting more than just one island during your visit as the ‘Out Islands’ or ‘Family Islands’ are very beautiful and not nearly as crowded as New Providence or Grand Bahama.  Examples include Eleuthera and Harbour Island, Andros, The Abacos, Long Island and Great Exuma. All these islands are accessible by Internal Airlines with Eleuthera being just a two hour ferry journey from Paradise Island on New Providence.

Wherever you go you’ll find a fascinating mixture Colonial and African traditions.
During Christmas and New Year the annual ‘Junkanoo’ celebrations take place featuring extreme costumes and very loud drumming. Sailing Regatta’s take place March through May on many of the Out Islands the most popular being the Out Island Regatta on Great Exuma during the last week in April.

Access
Many of the islands have international airports with incoming flights from Europe, the UK and USA. Nassau on New Providence Island is the main arrival point not just by air but also sea as many cruise liners stop here during their voyages.

Inter island transport is normally by one of the many internal airlines or by ferry.

Popular destinations
The most popular destination is New Providence.  Here you’ll find the famous Paradise Island with the equally famous ‘Atlantis Resort and superb aquarium’ and Cable Beach featuring many ‘up-market’ hotels and casinos.  Nassau, The Capital is a bustling town full of boutiques and jewellery stores as well as excellent restaurants.  It also becomes ‘home’ for a couple of days or so to the many Cruise Liners passing through.  While you’re in Nassau be sure to go swimming with the dolphins or take a whole day’s, fully inclusive outing, on a very fast boat with Island World Adventures. You’ll visit the beautiful Saddleback Cay, go snorkelling and swimming, feed the sharks, have a beautifully presented lunch under tropical foliage on split level dining decks, walk on or swim off an isolated sand bar and to end, make a visit to Leaf Cay to say ‘hello’ to dozens of friendly Iguanas just waiting to meet you. All drinks and food included! Unmissable!

Becoming more popular now is Grand Bahama with tourists being drawn to the colourful and vibrant Freeport/Lucaya area.  Here you will find beautiful beaches and
some of the best resort hotels in The Bahamas.  All this with very little traffic and beautifully made up roads!

Many of the ‘Out Islands’ have become very popular.  Andros, the largest island in The Bahamas has the Androsian Barrier Reef, the 3rd largest barrier reef in the world and also supports some of the best bonefishing anywhere.

Close to New Providence lies Eleuthera and Harbour Island.  On Eleuthera you will find an abundance of unspoilt, deserted white sandy beaches, or ring the bells of change by visiting Dunmore on Harbour Island.  Dunmore is very cosmopolitan and home to some of the finest hotels and restaurants in The Bahamas.  Often frequented by Hollywood’s ‘A’ list, it is well worth a visit, if only to swim off the fabulous Pink sands Beach.

If you’re into boating, The Abacos, the most northerly of the Bahamian islands, offer superb cruising grounds and are home to many expatriates.

To really chill out try Great Exuma, an island just 30 minutes flying time away from Nassau, that is witnessing dynamic growth, due to its excellent infrastructure and total beauty.  Exuma is home to the famous Four Seasons Hotel Resort featuring an 18 hole oceanside Greg Norman golf course.  Be sure to take time out to visit Stock Island, just one mile off George Town and soak up the fabulous deserted beaches or check out the famous ‘Chat ‘n Chill’ beach bar.  Once you’re there you won’t want to leave!

Long Island is another worthwhile visit to discover a very ‘laid back’ way of life.  There are two resorts of note, Stella Maris and Cape Santa Maria within ten minutes drive of one another.  Half way up the island around Thompson Bay and towards Indian Hole Point you’ll find a charming beach bar and restaurant on a beautiful little cove called ‘The Parrots of the Caribbean’.  Recommended!
