San Salvador Overview

With a population of just 1,200 and lying 200 miles southeast of Nassau, San Salvador, or ‘San Sal’ as it is known, is The Bahamas outermost island.   San Salvador island is an exposed peak of a submerged mountian that reaches 15,000 ft to the ocean floor.  It’s a small island, 12 miles long and six miles wide, however it supports many superb reefs and about 30 miles of beaches. Internally it consists mainly of  briny lakes and mangrove swamps.  For those into diving, fishing and bird watching San Sal offers a unique vacation opportunity.

Cockburn Town with a population of 300 is the main settlement where the weekly mail boat docks. Here you will find two churches, the library, courthouse, island clinic, police station and a drugstore. The Queen’s Highway encircles the island joining Cockburn Town with the Airport, Graham’s Harbour, Fortune Hill and Fernandez Bay.
